About the restaurant A Casa do Bacalhau

Onde o bacalhau é rei. Situado num Palácio construído após o terramoto de 1755, devido à parcial destruição do palácio que a família do Duque de Lafões tinha à data em Lisboa, fica situado mesmo ao lado do convento do Beato.
Na época da sua construção pouco existia à sua volta chegando o rio Tejo praticamente à zona da actual porta de entrada.
Este é o pano de fundo para a sala de jantar com quase 90 lugares, de onde se destaca o tecto original do século XVIII construído em abóbada com "tijolo burro".
O bacalhau é servido em harmonia com a melhor tradição culinária portuguesa, porque uma parte das receitas são fruto de uma pesquisa exaustiva onde foram rebuscados velhos segredos de cozinha escondidos pelo tempo, a que foram acrescentadas receitas contemporâneas que souberam resistir à história. O resultado é uma deliciosa ementa, consagrada definitivamente ao nosso fiel amigo mas onde se encontram também algumas surpreendentes alternativas.

Looks very fancy. Prices are very reasonable for the brilliant experience. 4 teenage girls we were treated with respect and we really appreciated how attentive the staff were.

We struggled a bit to find this restaurant since we walked from the city centre (bit of a trek, get a cab!) but once we were here it was fantastic. The bread and olives on the table are really lovely. We had vinho verde which was nice and cold and frequently topped up. We started with some bacalhau cakes (fluffy cod fish cakes) and sheep’s cheese with honey. They were good but the main course is where this restaurant shines. We shared the octopus and the bacalhau (cod) with smoked ham and chickpea purée. Both were absolutely gorgeous, rich and melt in the mouth. The cod isn’t too salty as you might think it would be. After seeing the dessert menu we had to cram some in! I had the chocolate mousse and pistachio ice cream which was totally delicious, and my partner had the creme brûlée (described on the English menu as rich caramelised cream). They were both wonderful. The atmosphere in the restaurant was really buzzy and not pompous, but it does feel quite special. The only tiny criticism if I were to make one might be that the courses come out quite quickly, but that could just be a Portuguese thing! Overall this restaurant deserves its great ratings and reviews, we were impressed!

Lovely ambience, professional service. Best cod I have ever eaten. Flambé crepes were excellent.
