About the restaurant Amarone

French allure reflected

Amarone is a place of international allure, complete with luxurious armchairs, fire place and white table cloths. Striking is the mirror wall, while another wall consists only of bottles of wine. Chef Gert Blom cooks honest food in his open kitchen following French example. Here you don't eat burgers and fries, but duck liver, rubarb and summer truffle.

Some waitresses were cold and unfriendly. Unfortunately this was one of the worst service quality experienced among similar restaurants

Staff was not that friendly, almost arrogant... food was good, but should not be classified as french food; it's more Mediterranean food.

Good to very good. A place to come back to. One of those restaurants where you feel safe - I mean you're sure that the basic stuff is surely there and you don't have to worry about freshness, dubious ingredients, politeness, bad cooking and a feeling they want to rob you :)
Excellent wines - we did enjoy our Cahors!
Classic and creative, the small menu is inciting and enticing.

I have been to Amarone twice. The first time as part of the 'Restaurant week' which can be a hit and miss experience. Second time we went with friends on a random Saturday evening. I love this restaurant! My first year in Rotterdam and I already have a few favourite restaurants, with Amarone sitting on top and it fully deserves it. Food, wine and service were top-notch both times. The staff quickly figured out I preferred to talk in English and since then all arrived speaking English first, which is a very nice touch. The quality of the food was as expected from a Michelin star place. Wonderful seasonal combinations with perfectly matching wines - thank you Amarone team for the memorable experience!

A Saturday evening out with my husband's parents. Certainly, the a la carte dishes were creative and tasty (one would not expect anything less at Michelin-star prices). Worthy of particular mention were the Canadian lobster and the scallops (both signature starters of the chef). The decor was exactly to my liking: modern with clean lines but at the same time warm and cosy. The atmosphere was very business-like. The staff seemed rushed, distracted and, in general, very cold. It's a pity that the warmth of the decor is not reflected in the service.

I never thought it was possible, but it is. You really can shop until you drop. The deal was as follows:Jelle could come out to play and stay the night as long as we bought him a whole set of clothes first. Plan was simple: 1 hour shopping and then a visit to a bar followed by dinner at the best place in town. After 4 hours non stop shopping though, and a wish list that was only half filled, we crawled somewhat humbly through the door and sat down at the table. Imagine Harrie has seen this sort of dejected look before as very soon a glass of Keller Riesling appeared and the frustration of all the shops with clothes for boys half our size and wallets twice as large disappeared . Its been almost 18 months since I´ve been in Rotterdam for a proper meal and the fact that this was the first choice on the list for the evening says all you need to know about the quality. We chose some great wines, composed a meal around it and then sat back and watched the restaurant flow. This is a not a place to come if you want to sit back and be wowed by a chef with tricks and bite size portions. Instead you get a plate of real food, sometimes simply prepared (but what do you need to do to goose liver other than cook it properly ?), that usually makes you want to lick the plate clean (which we did). If you order 4 dishes a la carte, like us, then the bill soon adds up, but at the end of the night Jelle was surprised at how cheap it was. That feeling of value for money makes a difference and that, together with a set of familiar faces, is the reason I keep returning. Still have to get Jelle a few suits and some more shoes, so hopefully we´ll get to arrange another shopping trip soon. Highly recommended.

Two years ago, I wrote a review that scored excellent on food & decor, but poor on service. For the past 1,5 years, during our business lunches, we have been attended by Maître Harrie Baas (the wine specialist). And I have to admit, if you want to have top notch attendance & service, you make sure you get him at your table. Also during a recent promotional week, I dined here with my wife. Other staff can still learn a lot from this gentleman.
