So this it: the last ever IENS review. After 12+ years of sacrificing myself for the culinary masses, I´ve decided to follow the example of Lennox Lewis, and retire at the top. A last review needs a fitting location and a song though, and neither were difficult to come up. I have a long list of names I have not yet visited yet, but this had to be the setting for my farewell. As well as being local, it showcases all that is good about horeca. Its a small team of young, dedicated and passionate people who are trying to make the best of things in difficult times. The presentation has always been good, there was a balance and a depth of flavour in my meal here on Sat that was missing from earlier visits. I only came for a late afternoon snack, but ended up sitting out on the terrace for 5 hours and worked my way through 5 different dishes. All 5 dishes were great, but the scallop tartare and a wonderfully cooked cod were probably the highlights. Complicated dishes of course - thats the modern style - but I thought it was similar in quality to the star restaurant I ate at in Den Haag last month. With great choices of wine per glass and a fair price tag, this has all that features that are needed for a great night out. Hope they continue to prosper. Thats it then. Time for 1 last song before I go,,,only 1 choice, so take it away Maxi. "this is my church".."this is where i heal my hurts"...Oh come on, you must know the rest.

If you check out the reviews I wrote about the Wereld Museum in Rotterdam, then you´ll find the story of a man who visited a lot, and only managed to leave the place once in a sober state. Having now been here a few time, I fear that history is starting to repeat itself. The problem of course is that the food is nice, so you want to eat at least 4 courses, and both the wine list and the selection of wines per glass are interesting and good value. Add in 2 sorts of Cuban rum and you have all the ingredients I need for a great night out. Just like it was last night. Great Cote de Boef, juicy chicken and a healthy lentil salad to start. Not the sort of evening I like to have on a school night, but it was fun.

It was meant to just be a quiet dinner, with a few glasses and a lot of chat about Mics new restaurant, but as so often happens when we go out, the excitement and the enthusiasm starts to take over and 3 courses become 4, then 5 (then 6 if you count the oysters to begin with). Add in a bottle of interesting Chardonnay from the Jura, a few glasses of something else, an inevitable bottle of red and some rum and coke to go with the desert (great match by the way) and you have the sort of night that you should not be having when you have to work the next day. Still, the menu is good, the service nice and relaxed and we have spent double this amount for less quality, Definitely one of Leidens top addresses and the best restaurant to open in town this year,

As expected the initial start-up faults have been corrected and this has turned into a very pleasant restaurant that offers very good value for money. The dishes all look great and manage to combine modern and classical elements. Ok, so last weeks night out was on another planet quality wise, but so was the bill. Duncan, a veteran of the Amsterdam restaurant scene could not quite believe it was possible to eat this good for this price. Service is still a bit slow and it would be interesting to see exactly how they cope on a full Sat night, but if its not sorted yet, then I´m sure its only a a matter of time. Great to see an interesting wine list at good prices.
