About the restaurant Café De Jaren

Get inspired

At this historic site once stood the home of the famous painter Rembrandt who hired it from regent William Boreel. If you are on the terrace or on the balcony of ‘Café de Jaren’ while looking out over the Amstel, you instantly know where he got his inspiration from. The quay is an enjoyment for every captain who longs for something delicious. In the various rooms is enough space for everyone to have coffee, drinks, lunch or dinner.

Seems to be lively during the day but was quite soulless in the evening. Food and service both lacked "enthusiasm"

It would be nice that the tables available could include the part outside next to the canal. We were informed that reservations could be done upstairs only

I visited Cafe de Jaren twice within a week for lunch and both times the service was awful. I had to run after the waiters to place the order on the first occasion, because nobody serviced our corner. On the second occasion they forgot about our order and we had to wait forever to receive our food. very disappointing especially since it is such a cool place and food is decent.

Despite we called one day in advance to flag that 2 guests had gluten allergy, the restaurant only proposed one GF option - we would have expected some of the options on the menu to be adapted for GF requirements
For the rest, the rest of the dishes were tasty and well presented

Staff is very unprofessional. For a location like that you can do much more. It's like a sports canteen. My recommendation will be to make it a place with more class.

The restaurant looks a bit like a canteen. I would renovate The 1st Floor into the same style as the ground floor and get rid of the salad bar. I have been downstairs so many times but had never booked a table in the restaurant. Food was good but not enough staff were on duty and the lovely grand cafe feel from downstairs did not filter through. Still a lovely evening.

Absolutely delightful. The terrace overlooking the canal is a lovey place to sit. The service was very good & our food delicious. De Jaren is one of my most favorite places to bring my visitors to Amsterdam , & everyone always loves it. Summer or winter!

We had breakfast on the terrace by the canal, when traffic was not too heavy.
It was a peaceful beginning to our visit in the Waterloo market, and to the Jewish quarter.
Prices are very fair for the experience you get. The interior hall seems inviting too.

I came here for a business dinner and while the environment is nice and we enjoyed the terrace (no sun after 5) I am not sure I would be going back.

Food: Of the 3 steaks we ordered as entrees they came out way overcooked, otherwise it was tasty.

Service: Nonexistent, had to regularly flag down the waiter and he didn't even pour the wine when it was brought to the table.

Lastly, the bathroom is not free!!! When you are paying over 20€ for an entree (+ starters & dessert for 5 people) I expect a free and decent facility for guests to use. With many restaurants in the vicinity, the restaurant was not so impeccable that I would return to eat and then have to pay for a restroom.

We had a brilliant evening. The setting sun casting light & shadows over the gabled houses & canals. We ate delicious food on the upper terrace, & enjoyed a good bottle of prosecco. The quality & price very good. A most beautiful setting on a summers evening. The waitress was very pleasant, very polite & gracious.
