About the restaurant Café Royalty

--------------------------------------------------------
Cafe Royalty is the only historically preserved grand romantic cafe in Andalusia and probably in all of Spain. Its rich paintings by well known Spanish artists such as Felipe Abarzuza, beautifully handcrafted carpentry from the era, and gold leaf plaster details together with early 20th century furnishings, will no doubt capture the attention of all its patrons.

It is proudly situated in the old quarter of Cádiz, the enchanting Plaza Candelaria previously the Emilio Castelar Plaza (former Spanish president of 1873, and his place of birth). This emblematic and elegant spot was in its day very popular with the city’s high society.

Local entrepreneur Gomez Doree, inaugurates the Cafe in 1912 in celebration of Las Cortes de Cádiz one hundred year anniversary. Thanks to its lavish decor, exquisite products, excellent service and nightly concerts, it rapidly becomes the most frequented cafe in Cádiz. Renowned writers, intellectuals, politicians, musicians and artists turn the cafe into a spot brimming with a unique and diverse atmosphere. It is visited by illustrious international figures such as the great local composer, Manuel de Falla, who delighted customers with his concerts.

In the 1930's, just prior to the Spanish Civil War, Cafe Royalty decides to close its doors. Then in the postwar 1940's it becomes a warehouse and shortly thereafter a bazaar. This was the start of its decline and impending fall into oblivion for the next seven decades.

In 2008 Ricardo de la Serna Viguera and his wife Ana Dolores Martin Fernandez, purchase the establishment and decide to meticulously restore it back to its splendor, recovering the Cafe Royalty brand. After a thorough investigation the de la Serna Martin family brings together a group of artists and professional restorers, who apply the same techniques and materials used in the turn of the 20th century. They carry out a long process of restoration staying true to the cafe's history, with the utmost care and detail of the original decoration from 1912.

In 2012, in midst of Las Cortes de Cádiz two hundred year anniversary, The Cafe Royalty reopens its doors to the city's locals and visitors, with the intention of renewing a symbol of harmonious quality, just as it was a century ago.

Wonderful seafood/rice/paella. Nass our waitress was excellent and the restaurant was beautiful. Such a shame it was less than half full on a Saturday evening. Hopefully this was a one off.

Go there for the ambiente, not for the food. The atmosphere and service was very nice, but they do not hold up with food quality for the price. The set menu (EUR 60,00 p.P.) was a disappoinment.

Absolutely inedible food ! Asked for 2 typical Andalusian dishes. The salmorejo, we tasted and immediately. It was too strong and salty.. And the tortillitas de camarón were greasy, overdone, , just awful.

Nice setting and lovely staff. Restaurant was quiet. We opted for the 40 euro menu. Entree of fish pate and goats cheese was nice. Also the Gazpacho. Tuna salad was mainly salad leaves. Steak was nice but all sides were dry and tasteless. Desert of bread and butter pudding was very dry and no cream/ice cream. We didn't eat a lot of our food. Most disappointing meal in Cadiz.

One of the best experiences we've ever had in Spain. Staff was very courteous, greeted us with warm smiles, seated us and politely waited for our order. Every dish served was done so with great detail and finesse. Food was absolutely superb and we enjoy all of it. Travelers tip; if you order a meat dish, ensure you specify to what degree of cooking it should be or it most likely will be be medium-rare. Definitely worth 5 stars rating.
Thank you Cafe Royalty!

Cafe Royalty was the restaurant my husband and I chose for our “expensive “ meal while we were visiting Cadiz for a couple of days. We weren’t disappointed. Everything was impressive - the decor, the service and the food. It was all excellent. We chose the fixed price menu with wine (a different, appropriate wine for each course) . It was all delicious and, actually, really good value. We can often spend more in a beach bar! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Cafe Royalty. It was really one of the best highlights of our visit to Cadiz.

We had New Year’s Eve there. Food was nice, service OK. The wines were awful (really cheap ones). By grouping people in tables of 12 people (x8) they took managed to fit the max, number of people in the restaurant.
