INSIDER tip

Olivier Normandin (aka Monsieur Zolive) the one who claims Le Bistro and L'epicerie to be his. Originally from Bordeaux, he wants to call Australia home so much that he put his name on the door of two of the Chez Olivier establishments in Melbourne. Chez Olivier is a reflection of Olivier's love for genuine, authentic, traditional and generous French food accompanied by some excellent wines both from his old and new countries. The staff believe that there are foodies out there like them who want a genuine and generous experience combining high quality and relaxed atmosphere, and their aim is to fulfill this experience.

Our second visit to Chez Olivier. We celebrated my husband’s birthday. We both loved the service, the drinks and the beautifully prepared French cuisine. A special place.

My partner and I had a pre- movie meal here and, as usual it was delightful. We had Prawns and the Escargot for Entrees and both were very tasty indeed. We both had the Salmon and it was cooked beautifully, in a rich sauce which was flavourful. Matched with a glass or two of the Chez Olivier Chardonnay, it was a satisfying meal!

Chez Oliver is an excellent French restaurant with very classical French food. It is well presented and delicious. Well recommended. The wine selection is also fantastic.

Friendly staff and good food. Really uncomfortable chairs though and did find the courses to be quite rushed. Ie meals came out in quick succession

Perfect French Experience. Food was classic as desired yet modern. Ambience was perfect with tables well spaced and areas divided. The wait staff were perfect in table attendance, attentive but not intrusive. Definately recommend to anyone wanting an intimate perfect dinner occasion.

We thought the food and service were excellent. I felt the restaurant was lacking some of the French ambience usually associated with a French Bistrot

Classic French dishes, a small bistro style place, a style I love, and great people! A solid wine list. A seat at the bar, that I also love. What else do you need?

The Duck was outstanding, the Bourguignon was good, but gravy not excellent, more vegetable reduction required. Service was attentive, no issues, the ambience upstairs is very loud, & a bit plain. We left early because of the noise.

Beautiful night out with our adult son. Fantastic food. Good wine by the glass but somewhat pricey????‍♂️. Our third, and it is not our last visit. Our son noted kitchen staff speaking French! So definitely authentic.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Food was well presented. The complimentary bread was a nice touch considering most restaurants make you pay for it nowadays. Would recommend this place to friends.

Everything great except the ambulance of upstairs, great French would really improve the look upstairs not just a heap of mirrors which is no where as good as downstairs

Wonderful food, great service. This was the second occasion we had been to Chez Oliver and it now a favourite spot. Was given a special treat when dessert came out - complete with sparkles, as it was birthday time! Hope to return soon!

Always an excellent restaurant. Never disappoints. My only negative is that I think the wall colours downstairs are too sombre, effecting the overall ambience.

About the restaurant

Whether you feel like a crisp, light lunch in the dining area, or a fully-fledged and committed degustation with the end result of sinking into a large lounge afterwards, you can enjoy the ambience that is Chez Olivier. It is one of the loveliest French restaurants in town. Here you will find traditional dishes such as escargot– snails cooked in garlic – or a beautiful goats' cheese salad. But whilst they use traditional French recipes, they also like to use exclusively Australian ingredients and in a style that is their own interpretation of what it is to be Australian. Here the sophisticated and caring staff urge you to thoroughly read the menu and take your time in ordering. And you will not be disappointed when the food arrives. Pop in for one of their well-loved Duck and Pinot nights on a Wednesday, or even speak with them about having your next work or social event here under the guidance of their function staff. Their wine list is smart, their staff even smarter and the food is of the very highest quality.
