About the restaurant Claire's Kitchen at Le Salon

Claire’s Kitchen at Le Salon

A star of the kitchen as well as the stage, former TV chef Marc Kuzma (aka Claire de Lune) lets his talents shine at his Darlinghurst venture, Claire’s Kitchen at Le Salon. Step through the doors from Oxford Street, and enter a world of glamour, decadence and French chic. Soaring ceilings, imported wallpapers, glittering chandeliers, white linen, black Louis XV chairs and French antiques will make you feel like you’re world’s away from the chaos of the bustling street outside. Oh oui, nous aimons que….(we love that!). Charming French waiters warmly welcome patrons at Claire’ and the brasserie classics with contemporary touches are done with true French finesse. The double baked three cheese soufflé or blue eye trevalla fillet served with crab bisque and spinach dumpling should be ordered immediately upon arrival and you should seriously consider finishing with something sweet from the dessert trolley followed by a fine French wine or Claire de Lune cocktail in the mezzanine bar. It’s French chic at its best.

Best dish: double baked three cheese soufflé

We have eaten here on a few occasions when visiting Sydney, unfortunately our experience tonight did not meet our expectations. The food was not up to the usually standard experienced in the past. I don’t think we’ll be coming back.

The atmosphere is nice, but expect a more quiet feel rather than a lively or buzzing one. We started with cocktails which were quite nice, and then had appetisers which were pretty good. The mains however were slightly disappointing. We ordered the chicken Maryland with risotto - but the chicken was still pink and undercooked, while the risotto was actually still crunchy :( We had booked for 6pm which is when the restaurant opens and suspect the risotto had not been cooking for long enough. For the price and pedigree of the restaurant, this was really unexpected and disappointing. We also had the duck pie which was nice but quite rich so difficult for a single person to finish - best to share this one. The green beans we had on the side were a bit overdone for me (though my partner liked them), and the french fries weren't really very fresh. The waiters were pleasant, but a bit difficult to get a hold of (granted we were seated in a corner so a bit tucked away from them). We walked in to a waiter mopping the floor while patrons were already seated, which isnt a deal breaker but again quite surprising given its price and pedigree. It was a passable experience overall but we'll not be rushing back anytime soon.

Nice and interesting vibe, the waiters were very warm and welcoming throughout the meal, although it did take quite some time for the bill as we were in a rush.

This is the 4th or 5th time that we have eaten here and the food is excellent and I love the array of wine by the carafe.
The service was just slightly ‘off’ on the night (drinks slow to arrive etc) but very minor and I must say out of character in our experience but overall it was another lovely evening at this excellent restaurant.

Claire’s kitchen is a bit on the pricey side but it makes up for it with a genuine French ambience ,genuine French service and a genuine French menu .The duck pie was superb with excellent pastry and an original taste.,the snapper was beautifully cooked and the cheese soufflé.was the best I’ve had.It was good to see carafes available on the wine list.

Great French food served by wonderfully hospitable staff in a beautifully decorated venue. A fantastic place to catch-up with friends who were in from the US and loved the entire experience. Thank you to the whole team at Claire’s Kitchen.

Excellent meal with excellent service. Great to find a wonderful restaurant where you’re not turfed out 1 and a half hours after you arrive. Also great to be able to hear yourself talk. All in all a great experience and a place we’ll be returning to in the future!!

For entree we ordered half a dozen escargot, fried zucchini flowers and beef tartare. The escargot was buttery and garlicky, we could've easily ordered a dozen. The fried zucchini flowers from the specials were crunchy and was balanced with the addition of cheese. The steak tartare was creamy with some mustard/horseradish, it had a nice spicy/sour note which went well with the creaminess.

For mains we had the duck pie and Moroccan lamb pastry. The duck pie was very rich with a good sauce. Note, it would've been better with a side of salad or something similar to cut the richness and meatiness of the pie. The lamb pastry was beautifully balanced with a serving of couscous mixed in with pomegranate, figs and pistachios.

All in all, a good French restaurant with good service. We went at 6:30pm and food came out quite quickly.

The dishes were generously portioned and the truffle mash was to die for. The dishes were extremely tasty and reminiscent of the food my partner and I had in France a few years ago. Would recommend coming back if you enjoy good quality French food.
