About the restaurant De Beren Schiedam

Cruise your way through the BBQ

Barney Beer is true to its name. All around you'll see stuffed animals (yes, bears) which creates a cozy atmosphere. Outside kids and dogs can play in the garden. The location is wonderful at the bank of the Maas river where cruiseships slowly pass by. What more do you need? Lovely bbq dishes!

The restaurant chain "De Beren" (The Bears) consists of more than 20 restaurants in the West and South of the Netherlands; the restaurant name is always a variation on "Beer" (Bear). The name of the restaurant in Schiedam is "Barney Beer". We have noticed that there is a certain variation in food quality between various "Beren" restaurants, but the Schiedam branch are the good bears. I had a plate of plaice fillet with very tasty fries and a chocolate dessert you can only dream of. Service is prompt and prices are moderate. The ambiance is somewhat old fashioned. A restaurant to go to for a good and informal meal.

The atmosphere of "Barney Beer" is not everybodies cup of tea with the somewhat artificial cosiness and low lighting (the torch app in the smartphone is needed to read the menu). Furthermore, we went off to a rocky start with a frugal poured glass of Palm beer, but the food, the presentation and the service did offer more than enough compensation. The fried salmon fillet with French fries and vegetables was delicious and well presented. The salad came in a separate dish, which is a well thought out attribute. The service of the staff was surprisingly good. I expect not much in a Dutch restaurant were young women are serving, (the service will turn out to be mostly bumbling and obtuse) but in this restaurant the service of the staff was polite, cheerful and well trained. Prices are moderate, for Dutch restaurants; € 19.95 for a three course menu. Generally speaking, the restaurant "Barney Beer") offered a pleasant surprise and I have added the establishment to my short list.
