About the restaurant Dona Amélia

The staff were very obliging and attentive. Our computer booking had confirmed to us but not to the maitre d but fortunately there was a table spare. The floor space was rather cramped but did not spoil our night out.

Lovely views from inside the restaurant upstairs. Staff very welcoming, efficient and noticed our needs, even helped me off with my jacket. Good smoked swordfish starter and palma ham starter. Main courses, pork fillet and ckicken with prawn tagliatelle both delicious. Desserts very good fruit kebab and banana flambe. Portuguese wine not expensive and they had half bottles. Will come again.

Quaint and old fashioned but obviously quite popular. Staff were friendly but sloooooooooow. I had seafood mousse and calves liver. The former was quite vinegary but the main was very tasty. I wouldn’t repeat.

Booked this restaurant as we have used it many times in the past few years but on this occasion the meal was very disappointing and we had to wait over an hour to even being served with a drink let alone a meal

Dona Amélia is one of the best Restaraunts in Funchal. The service is excellent and the food is reasonably priced for the level of quality and care on offer. For example, for c€20 you can have a lobster tail with taglioni pasta - far better value than most seafood restaurants in the island where you would have to choose a full lobster out of the tank costing much more. As well as the starters, mains and desserts, there was complimentary amuse bouché (mini bruschetta) and a complimentary mini vanilla tartlet with the coffee. The staff were excellent - very welcoming and provided great advice on choices of dishes etc. The sister restaraunt (up the road) which we visited in a previous trip is equally good. For me, 10/10

We enjoyed our meal. The chateaubriand steak was very tender and perfectly cooked. However my crab soup should have been served at a slightly higher temperature in my view.
