About the restaurant Dona Amélia

We love Dona Ameilia. It's the always the place for our first and last nights when we visit Madeira. The food is wonderful, but the best thing isthat somehow it has a magic feel to it. We feel both at home and somewhere special when we visit. Highly recommended!

This restaurant is a little above the run of the mill places in Funchal, of which there are hundreds. The staff are attentive without being fussy and the food is good. Restaurant food on Madeira does tend to follow a set pattern and although this place is above average, I think there is an opportunity to be a bit more adventutprous here. The challenge would be not just to provide more or less the same food as other restaurants, albeit at a somewhat better standard than many but to leave behind green beans and carrots and strike out with something new.

We will return in all probability. If you want scabbard fish, with or without banana (and who does not!) this is as good as it gets!

Our only real negative about the restaurant was that the portions were far too big and the plate piled too high with vegetables.

We were pleased we booked before leaving UK as restaurant full upstairs by 7.30 must admit with more 'mature' clientele. Also we had possibly best table. Everything about the restaurant was excellent - the service, the food and the ambience.

we made the booking early in the morning in the hope of an upstairs table. The person who received the on line booking mixed this up with another restaurant. Hence when we arrived there was no table booked for us and we had to take a table in the downstairs room. Not a satisfactory outcome. We received an apology but would hesitate to use an on line booking service again

Wonderful mid 60s time warp. Creaps etc. But perfect.
Seamed to be mainly English 60+ customers. But could not fault service or food. £60+. But would cost 90+ in UK. Phil

The food could not be faulted. Our only concern would be that the tables are far too closely spread, making profit clearly the main objective.

We were so impressed with the place that we ate here twice. The staff are friendly and efficient, the food is very good and we found the atmosphere exactly to our taste.

We started with sparkling wine, Portuguese of course. Starter of smoked Ham and melon was high quality local cured ham, the duck terrine was also very good. My main of Scabbard fish flambé was excellent, and not a bone in the whole thing! My partner had a main of pork fillet flambe was also declared to be very good. A selection of cheeses was varied and high quality. We opted for the only local wine, a red Terras do Avo, a medium body and with a very smooth finish - just perfect for us.

The Head Waiter made a point of speaking to us on our second visit, and bade us goodbye when we left.

We will definitely be back here on our next visit to Madeira. Highly recommended.

We have been to Dona Amelia many times and never been disappointed, it's always on the agenda during our annual visits to Madeira. Recommend the sea food risotto. Wise to book before hand.
