Amazing anchovies, probably the best I have ever had. Fish dishes outstanding. Service warm/friendly and the staff went out of their way to ensure we were happy. Will be recommending to friends and family.

Chose El Arandia from previous Trip Advisor recommendations and we weren't disappointed. We had smoked sardines and octopus to start and hake and monk fish for the main courses. All were excellent and we'll cooked. The waitress spoke excellent English and was very informative and friendly.
Well worth trying.

Modest looking from the outside, all you can see is the small bar. The dining room is cozy with about 10 tables/30 seats, in traditional style. Mix of tourists and locals. The set menus are mostly for 2 people, because the main dish is a txuleta that weighs more than a kilo (with bone). There are also several fish dishes and daily specials that they can explain to you in 3 or 4 different languages.

The main event for me was the meat, and it did not disappoint. Simply seasoned and quickly grilled and sliced, you finish cooking it to your own taste right on the table. It gets a little smoky in the dining room because this is happening at every table. The accompaniments (fried potatoes and marinated sweet red peppers) are also perfect.

Unfortunately I did not see any of the desserts, so I have to go back for that.

I was expecting something exceptional, since it was the #3 restaurant in Bilbao. It was just ok, with some items disappointing.

The highlight was the "chuleton de ternera", a really tender cut of meat. We had to cook it ourselves in a grill placed in our table. Maybe some people enjoy that (and probably at some times I do as well), but I would have rather have a really well cooked piece of meat from the kitchen.

The two items that were the most disappointing: the waitress made me us uncomfortable in her ways (and I sensed alcohol in her breath), and there was a $15 entree with asparagus that felt like just taken out of a can.

The staff are lovely, helpful and cheerful. The food is fantastic, although be aware that the portions are huge! The fish soup was the best I have ever had, with the most generous amount of fish. My husband was incredibly happy with his steak and liked the fact that he could cook each piece to his taste. I was so happy that we managed to get a table here. Definitely book it, you will not be disappointed!

We were lucky to be there on a Wednesday to experience the special basque meal. The food was marvelous and plentiful. The staff was friendly and helpful and spoke english and could explain the menu very well. Favorites were the mushrooms, beans, blood sausage and cod. Next time we're in Bilbao we'll return to this restaurant and bring friends. It's a great place for a long afternoon lunch.

This is the best restaurant experience we have had. The service was amazing and the food matched it by being really good quality. It was such a pleasure to eat there and be educated about local food by the 'lady of bergona' and we would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a real basque experience. When you walk in from the street you really have no idea!
