About the restaurant

L'authenticité rustique et alsacienne dans la partie "ancienne chapelle"

Dès 1506, on signale déjà la chapelle St Jacques de l'ancien Hôpital. À cette époque, l'arrière du bâtiment fut un hôpital de 23 lits où l'on servait de la soupe aux pauvres, l'avant de ce bâtiment servant de chapelle.

Sur le pignon de style gothique est marquée, entre deux anges, l'inscription tirée de l'évangile : « Cherchez et vous trouverez - frappez et l'on vous ouvrira ».

Devenue maison particulière, elle fût successivement : boucherie, ferblanterie et, en 1977, caveau « À l'Ancienne Chapelle ».

Les repas d'antan étaient particulièrement abondants et, de ce fait, lourds à digérer. De plus, les lois de la diététique n'étaient guère connues. C'est à l'occasion d'un de ces repas, particulièrement copieux, que certains évoquèrent les vertus de la bière dont la vente restait toujours prohibée.

Dès lors, la tentation devint trop grande et un esprit ingénieux trouva la bonne solution. Ces vénérables se levèrent sans mot dire. Coiffés du tricorne, en habits somptueux, ils portèrent les restes du repas à l'hospice, situé à proximité de l'hôtel de ville. Ce geste fut naturellement très apprécié des malades et des vieillards et cacha l'intention sous jacente. Passant par la chapelle Saint-Jacques de l'hospice et sortant par la porte de derrière, les notables se faufilèrent ensuite le long d'une ruelle étroite qui menait directement à la brasserie Rue St Fulrade.

Personne n'assistait à ce stratagème.

On but ce soir là plus que de coutume.
