About the restaurant Lá ao Fundo

Helpful staff, menu in English. Happy to serve tap water. Good value for money. We were possibly the only tourists there on a Saturday night.

Located on a quiet and picturesque street next to the fort, eating outside was calm and enjoyable. Waiters very attentive. We ate the chicken marsala, good but a bit bland, and the chicken Mozambique, better but the chicken was over done and it would be nice if it was served with a mango chutney to off set the spiciness of the dish. Good size portions and reasonable prices. Would go hear again but try other food.

I booked the restaurant that day only to find that our table was on the street. They managed to put a table inside but very close to another table already occupied. I found the service overall a bit 'full on' and too fussy. My starter of breaded prawns was tasty when I asked for some Piri piri sauce. My main course was the veal au Fundo. Problem was that the meat was virtually raw having asked for medium rare. Although they were quick to bring another steak it spoilt the meal as it put a bad feeling to my birthday meal. The sauce with was awful - it tasted of bitter red wine and port. Veg was well cooked. The other two dishes - picanha on a stone ( except there was no stone)! and the octopus were fine. Overall not my best meal out in a restaurant in madeira.

After reading previous comments I was expecting food with more flavour and subtle spicing. Sadly my meal was quite bland and our waitress was not at her best. The setting and atmosphere was good and I would try it again just in case I was unlucky this time around..

We have decided to visit La ao Fundo after all great reviews on all sites, but unfortunatly our experience was not so positive.
I have ordered tar-tar, risotto with seabass and my husbund tomatto soup and veal steak as medium rare. Tar-tar was not in menu and lady said that it is special chef dish. I'm fan of tar-tar and i decided to take it, additionally informing lady that i ask to make tar-tar not spicy.
I was waiting and waiting my tar-tar, while i chef wad making it for other tables and it was reall show from him. After 40 mins risotto appeared. It was good, but not outstanding. When my husbund tried steak it was as well done. When chef came up to us to ask how is steak, husbend said that it nit what he asked and that my tar-tar is still not here.
Thanks to chef steak was took of and in 5 mins new one was on the plate which was good. And about tar-tar it turned out that lady did not get i want bith tar-tar and rissotto, but in fact i think it is just carelessness from waitress side. Small variant of Tar-tar was made as compliment for me from chef side, what was good.
Overall our expectations were overestimated and in the end now i can not say if only waitress carelessness was the main fail or also food was not as fantastic as we expected.

Excellent food with absolutely fresh fish and creative dishes, we enjoyed it very much, clearly positively different to the standard touristic restaurants on offer
