LE RESTAURANT
La Mère Brazier, c’est Eugénie Brazier, fondatrice du restaurant en 1921 et figure tutélaire de la gastronomie lyonnaise. Elle fut de la première promotion des trois étoiles, lorsque le Guide Michelin les a instituées. Elle les gardera jusqu’en 1968, en ajoutant trois autres pour son restaurant de Pollionnay. Lorsque Mathieu Viannay rachète l’établissement, Eugénie Brazier est décédée depuis 27 ans. Avec les décorateurs Alain et Dominique Vavro, il conserve l’âme du lieu, faïences des années 30, parquet et baies vitrées. Des rideaux en velours et des tables Knoll sont venus moderniser l’étage. Ne manque aux murs que la parole.

LE CHEF
Mathieu Viannay est né à Versailles en 1967 mais il a fait de Lyon sa patrie d’adoption. Il y a en effet ouvert son premier restaurant, en 1998, Les Oliviers. Il lui donne son nom en 2001 et obtient une première étoile en 2005. Il sait déjà qu’il partira puisqu’il a racheté la Mère Brazier, en 2004, l’année où il est aussi devenu l’un des Meilleurs ouvriers de France. Après de longs travaux, le restaurant rouvre en 2008. L’étoile qu’il a apportée avec lui se dédouble dès 2009. Il doit son succès à une connaissance encyclopédique de la cuisine française, au soin qu’il prend à sourcer ses produits et à une précision diabolique dans les cuissons, les jus et les assaisonnements. À son répertoire : artichaut et foie gras poêlé, pain de brochet croustillant aux écrevisses, canette laquée aux agrumes et épices, omelette norvégienne flambée au whisky, abricots et amandes.

The best meal we've had in our three trips to France. Detailed, expert, friendly service. Beautiful, superbly prepared, delicious food. Delightful, peaceful atmosphere. Amazing wines. Everything just perfect from start to finish.

Really lovely meal which we thoroughly enjoyed. Not perfect (jus a little too salty, too much lemon in the sesame sauce which overpowered the veal) but nothing that majorly affected our enjoyment. Big plus were the staff who were professional, discrete and very friendly. Thoroughly recommend it.

The restaurant was superb in every way. The service was truly attentive and accommodated some unusual requests without showing any dismay. Food was wonderful and I was so stuffed after the 3 course lunch. Flavor combination was imaginative and playing smart. There were quite a few variations of green peas offerings, though. The chef came out to greet the guests as the lunch service was winding down which made the dining experience especially personal and even more enjoyable. Definitely deserving of its Michelin 2 star. Despite the price, I would definitely come back when I return to visit Lyon.

My first visit to La Mere Brazier (LMB) became eventually unique and unforgettable in every meaning.
First visit to Lyon, our 30th wedding anniversary and unexpected delay by 2 hours! due to a heavy traffic accident on highway back from Annecy. But LMB welcomed us very politely and friendly.
Every cooking and wine was well recommended and explained, perfect dinner for us, together with greeting from handsome Mathieu.
We enjoyed our commemorative night and understood the essence of marriage of foods and wines.
Thank you, all staff of LMB, with our best wishes. We wish we would be back.

An exquisite dining experience. Every dish was distinct and superb'; the service was unobstrusive and professional. There is a broad selection of fine wines. If I ever return to Lyon I'll make a reservation here well in advance.

Outstanding food and service. A mix of the classics with newer more modern dishes. Encyclopedic wine list with wide selection of quality wines in all price ranges. Quite expensive but worth it for a special occasion.

So far the best yet in Lyon. The service was outstanding. The food presentation was very creative. Love the chef! A little pricey but if you're celebrating a special day then this is the place to be.

The wine was served at a too high temperature. The lobster paired with the Bresse chicken appeared not fresh. The abalone was poorly cooked so that it had a phenomenal toughness!

We try hard to the everyday life to satisfy our clientele and we bring a particular care to the quality of the products which we work. I can guarantee you that the lobster which accompanied the chicken who was been of use to you could not be fresher because it was still alive that very morning. I would have liked exchanging with you, during your dinner, on the cooking and the texture certainly particular ofabalone. The purpose of our work being the pleasure I can be only saddened by your felt and I kindly request you to excuse us for it.
The cooking is a delicate exercise which calls on to the sensibility of each and rest a very subjective art.

nous nous attendions à un repas exceptionnel, digne d'un deux étoiles, très bon mais peut-être pas un deux étoiles, nous voulions faire wouah ! mais cela sera pour une autre fois !
