About the restaurant La Tupina - Maison Fredon

"POLISHED BY THE YEARS - like the earthen pot from which it derives its name, the restaurant la Tupina has retained its spirit, despite international recognition. The cuisine of this gastronomic temple of Old Bordeaux continues to attract with the quality of its products and the mastery of its culinary repertoire.

THE BEST FROM THE SOUTHWEST - entry onto the Rotisserie and a stall of fresh products... Every day, the chef visits the surrounding markets and local producers, looking for rare pearls. Products are then prepared without artifice.

GOURMET STREET - Since 1968, la Tupina made small encounters, and today the street Porte de la Monnaie multiplies gourmet encounters: Café Tupina, Kuzina, Bar Cave or even Au Comestible, the grocery store, embody the spirit of the founder."

We had a fantastic meal here; good menu choices and great quality produce. Friendly staff able to translate our terrible French. Who knew caviar was a great seasoning for a boiled egg and the billion calorie goose fat chips were worth every mouthful. We finished with a delicious Armagnac (1987) and left very happy and full people!! Wonderful atmosphere and an authentic French experience!!

Great New Years lunch. We had a warm welcome and excellent service. Pan fried foie gras, cote de boeuf and chips to die for. The special dessert was a coco late flower which ´blossomed’ as the sauce was poured. Gorgeous to look at and to eat.

Fantastic and low key, rustic, informal restaurant. A real gem and not too expensive. Feels like a late 19th century French farm house but is actually a wonderful restaurant.

Excellent food along with great service. Would highly recommend this restaurant for lunch. Veggie options available but definitely more for a carnivore

Through a tiny arch a stones throw from the river very close to the centre of the city. A truly old building. You are initially faced with the open grill and cauldron (still used to make soups) the selection of meats and fresh vegetables. Atmosphere is old world French a with a cheerful welcome. Service is smooth and friendly and could be described as gentle. Its not slow but its not frantic either. Time is given to enjoy the food and talk. Step back from the world and genuinely enjoy fresh local Bordeaux cookery. Local ceps simply fried in goose fat came to the table in individual frying pans. Shoulder of lamb cooked for 9 hours and falling from the bone. Accompanied by braised white beans soft and tasty. An excellent selection of local wines, its Bordeaux after all. This is not delicate little dishes, its big hearty fullsome, simple food with wonderful flavours. Eat the food drink the wine and enjoy a great spot. Thoroughly recommended. Reasonably priced we would certainly go again. You need to book.

A truly wonderful restaurant. Welcoming, professional and personable.
We visited as my Mum has wanted to dine in La Tupina ever since Rick Stein mentioned it - and it did not disappoint!

Watched BBC’s Rick Stein while in Belgium,
before coming to Bordeaux - like many others,
who found their way to this jewel...
Raining cats and dogs by the time we arrived, but we were let in before they opened.
Starter with pan fried mushrooms, tournedos
with foie gras with French fries cooked in duck fat and dessert of lemon sorbet with white Armagnac - one of the best lunches ever!
Ambiance and service outstanding.... loved it.

We had the lunch time set menu at a very reasonable price - only a few euros more than cafés along the street and much better. A very pleasant meal in traditional surroundings among mostly French diners who know the place and are known.
Minor issues were that the quiche was room temperature (possible deliberate since some chefs advocate eating at room temperature) and the fish was also much cooler than we are used to. BUT the quiche was outstanding and the fish (coley) was copious, fresh and tasty (caramelised skin not cruchy though - may be connected to temperature issue). Slightly mysterious dessert was less impressive - could have been better explained.
Certainly worth recommending for a set lunch of a high quality.

Had the lamprey, which was very "interesting." At the last minute we added the roast pigeon to our order. It smelled great, but was dry and tough, which was both surprising and disappointing. Wine list very good. Cahors was a great choice. Service very good. Overall good, but not a transcendent experience. (for better or worse, it seemed mainly filled with tourists rather than locals.
