About the restaurant Maria da Mouraria - Casa de Fados
There, where ‘saudade’ (sense of longing) is acclaimed as the soul of a people, filled with a spirit that is genuinely Portuguese, lies one of the oldest and most authentic secrets in the history of Lisboa: the Mystery Of Fado…
Those who pass be the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Chapel of Our Lady of Health), at the entranceway to Mouraria, enter a world that reflects the true essence of the city, where a mixture of aromas, languages and dialects form a melting pot of cultures that seem to represent a distant past transported to the present day.
At the entrance of Rua do Capelão (Capelão Street), a sculpture of a Portuguese guitar announces Mouraria, the Cradle Of Fado. This is a short, narrow street, where time stands still, leaving us to wander its curious lanes and alleyways, the windows of the houses seemingly eager to share their stories.
It is here where Casa da Severa (Maria Severa’s House) would have once stood. Severa, a Woman who played the guitar and whose singing evoked pain and melancholy, as if she were singing of Fate, longing and disgrace, of loves and lovers lost. It was why people would say that Maria Severa “used to sing fado”.
Rebuilt and adapted by the architect José Adrião, this house is under the management of Museu do Fado. Currently, it contains a restaurant that serves Portuguese delicacies and is the only Casa de Fado (Fado House) in Mouraria.
Fado singer Hélder Moutinho, Bela and Carlos Silva welcome visitors to the restaurant, where the sound of the Portuguese Guitar, the Fado Guitar and Voices can be heard every night, from Wednesdays to Sundays. The restaurant also hosts family parties, film screenings and Fado gatherings.
There is an old saying among Fadistas, whether they be singers, musicians, poets or listeners: fado is neither created nor seen, neither sought nor idealised. It merely happens… The Mystery of Fado….

At the heart of the real authentic Lisbon, a truly fantastic place. One is made to feel home immediately, the food and the drinks are very generous and the fado singers and musicians are just.... there are no words, come and enjoy !

Small and intimate restaurant with a feel of home. I felt relaxed and welcome and once the music started I was completely encompassed by the emotion of the song. This is not just about the food, this is about the history and the understanding of the Portuguese people. A wonderful experience!

Absolutely loved this little find. It was 50 per person for dinner and the fado. We go little appetizers for the table, all order there set for you. A variety of traditional portugese food. Then you choose a main and a dessert. it comes with wine, beer or port. Loved the fado and the service was amazing.

A wonderful traditional Portuguese meal and experience that will be a highlight of our trip to Lisbon. It was like having a cozy dinner in a friends home with some amazing local talent performing just for us. I would recommend this over one of the touristy Fado houses, hands down. .Two things to note: payment in cash only, we knew that but a large party sitting near us were surprised. Location is not accessible by car, it's a short walk from where Uber can drop you off, but my husband is handicapped and this caught us by surprise. Our server was outstanding, he walked us back out to the street to catch our Uber when the evening was over.

The restaurant was adorable and the staff was very attentive. Unfortunately the food was just mediocre. I understand completely that this is for tourists, of which I am one, but for the 50€ price I will take better quality over quantity which is what was provided. I’m glad I went, but don’t expect a stellar meal.

Everybody told us not to go to a fado restaurant. We are happy, that we always have a look at things to make our opinion by experience, not by opinions of other people.. Thanks for this wonderful night at the great team of Maria da Mouria!

The food was wonderful. The musicians were talented, warm and engaging. I had great conversations with intelligent, well-traveled people. The atmosphere was great. The restaurant, was somewhat smaller, than I thought it would be. However, the positive, was it provided an opportunity to meet and talk with some very wonderful, interesting people! The staff were really hospitable, attentive. I really appreciated, being escorted, by staff, to my taxi, to ensure my safety, after the event, which ended somewhat late at night! They, the staff, went way and beyond what I expected. Thank you, for a wonderful evening.

The atmosphere, the service, the fado and the food were all amazing. The waiters went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and they were only overshadowed by the talented singers who made everyone sit in awe of their voices and emotion.

The restaurant is tiny and the people are packed in but this contributes to the atmosphere. We were early and invited to savour a drink outside overlooking the courtyard where we surveyed a frenetic preparation of fires and food in the restaurants below. When we arrived at our table, we were impressed by the array of starters and the beautifully table. That set a precedent for what followed - delicious seafood chosen from a sizable menu, red and white wine and we had a delicious mango dessert.
The service was impressive, attentive and personal and of course, the fado singers were sincere, soulful and skilled. We left feeling very satisfied that we had experienced authentic Portuguese food and Fado. It is a must for anyone’s first visit to Lisbon.
