Born and raised in Thailand, Tiw Rakarin spent his formative years surrounded by the wonderful tastes, colours and fresh produce of Northern Thailand, where his family owned a market near Chiang Rai, cultivating his love for food. Tiw's food journey has taken him around the world where he has worked in leading Asian restaurants throughout Los Angeles, Boston, England and Australia. To add to his impressive repertoire, in Sydney Tiw was executive chef at popular eatery Mama's Buoi in Surry Hills and prior to that, head chef at Thai restaurant, Alphabet St, in Cronulla.

About the restaurant

A journey down the Mekong.

Housed within the new ultra trendy Kensington St precinct in Chippendale, Mekong is paying homage to the flavours of south east Asia. Just imagine yourself embarking on a colourful journey down the Mekong river, sailing past gilded pagodas and rice paddies and through lush jungles. This restaurant is peaceful and refined, offering sophisticated Asian fare that is both beautiful and flavourful. Enjoy share plates and a number of beautiful desserts that are curious and complex.

Menu highlights include ‘Duck at Sunrise': confit duck laid on red Thai curry with fresh tomato and pineapple and the ‘Spice of the omelette: crispy Lao omelette stuffed with sliced pork, morning glory and soy-chilli sauce.

The dessert menu is also delicious and the signature three-tiered dessert of rosewater lychee mousse, mango puree and meringue drops, flecked with elderflower, rose petal and raspberries is definitely worth saving room for.
