About the restaurant Osteria Ara 36

The Osteria is situated in the heart of the Isola Superiore dei Pescatori, in a historic building featuring frescoes from 800’s. It was owned by Ugo Ara, a famous violinist and composer who chose this very island for his dwelling.

Our kitchen philosophy The prime ingredients, from our salts to our flours, are of Italian origin. They are all of high quality selected with much care in order to offer a healthy, honest and unique dining experience. We prepare fresh bread, bread sticks and cakes every day.

Your vacation is served On our plates and in our glasses, only the very best from this land can be found. We are here to help guide the discovery of the many authentic flavours of Italy from the Aosta Valley to Sicily.

    IN AUTO DALL'ITALIA: Autostrada A26 Genova Gravellona Toce; uscita Carpugnino o Baveno-Stresa. DALLA SVIZZERA: Autostrada fino a Bellinzona, poi raggiungere Locarno e proseguire in auto o con il traghetto.
  • Car park Parcheggiare l'auto a Stresa, Baveno o Carciano. Poi prendere il traghetto per l'Isola Superiore dei Pescatori.

My wife and I were contemplating whether or not if we had room for dessert at the table or enjoy a gelato al fresco whilst admiring the views from the island. When the waiters burst out in song (it was our wedding anniversary) bringing forth a celebratory cake to mark the occasion. The cake was a delicious sponge cake soaked in lemon topped with pipped cream. What a lovely gesture we thought until we asked for the bill to discover a charge of €20 for it. This was more than twice the price of two of the more expensive desserts. We questioned our waiter but not wanting to cause a scene, we paid the bill abd asked for the manager on leaving. I encountered the two co-owners and explained how we felt. After some questioning and debate between the team it was decided that we were to be refunded. Not having left a tip, we gave the €20 to our waiter. The whole episode had marred what was a lovely lunch however we did get to take the remaining half of the cake with us which we offered to our B&B hostess.

Great location and a very nice spot given to us with a lake view and a romantic intimate setting.

Our lunch was excellent. We split the house made ravioli stuffed with lake fish for our primi and had the halibut for 2 with vegetables for our main. Shared a strawberry semifreddo for dessert. The staff was helpful and enjoyable---especially our waiter, Alberto. Just go with Alberto's recommendations! The Langhe rose was perfect with our meal. This is such a nice change from the more touristy restaurants.
