I chose this randomly because it was hard finding one item for lunch on Sunday, what a fantastic surprise, the entrees, mains and dessert were the best. The spaghetti Marinara was the best I have eaten and the Osso Bucco just melted in your mouth. There were six of us and everyone enjoyed their food, our waiter Joe was great. Will be going back again. Loved it.

We enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant, a great position for family from West and East Victoria and family down from NSW to meet. Most staff welcoming, friendly and efficient, but unfortunately to waiter allotted to us seemed to forget about us, we were having to ask another to place our order, we asked him for the menu again for desert and he didn't bring it so we had to go and get menus. Apart from this a lovely little family restaurant

We love eating at Picolo Mondo, have fever faulted the meals but tonight the garlic prawns and whiting were a bit too salty. Desserts were yum and service is always great!

Great fresh food with efficient friendly staff. The owner has access to fresh fish off the boats, so this was nice to know when ordering the seafood.

Wonderful Italian cuisine served with a smile. A very extensive menu which we all enjoyed. Service was prompt but not rushed. We will definitely be back soon.

Oysters were not fresh even though the boss told us they are always fresh. Other food was very tasty and we enjoyed our other meals. The service was ok until we paid the bill and didn’t tip the waiter and he got mad and stomped off without saying a word!

Food was expensive for what It was. There seems to be only outside seating on a unusually cold night, and had young people in and out for a good hour. Tiramisu was good though

Whole flounder with salad and a glass of Pinot Grigio - just a perfect summer lunch.

The service unfortunately appears to have declined over the last 18 months. Piccolo Mondo was our favourite in Lygon Street - we have been visiting for over four years now. Unfortunately on this last occasion (Dec 2020), the friendly waiter that escorted us to our table was quickly replaced by another man who came across as not just unfriendly, but rude and unpleasant. Despite being very quiet when we arrived, we were also left waiting for service for extended periods when we were wanting to order. This was made worse by the fact three staff were having a friendly, casual conversation for an extended period only five or so metres away right in front of us (and didm’t seem to notice us looking at them - we shouldn’t have to wave and sing out the whole time guys). We don’t dine out that much and were out for a special night out without the kids. I’m not sure what happened but our waiter just didn’t seem interested in us. Despite this we stuck it out and the food was excellent. However the poor service was a real let down and will make us reconsider next time.

I was concerned at the lack of social distancing with outdoor tables which were clearly not 1.5 metres apart. Our outdoor table was right next to a table for the restaurant next door. It felt like we were sharing the same table with strangers.

Absolutely well worth trying this place. Real traditional Italian food, family business who actually make their own pasta etc. friendly people and service brilliant. Highly recommend

Food quality wasn't what I was expecting from the reviews, although the gnocchi was very good but not much else. Staff were welcoming and attentive, but Covid protocols were poor. Sharing oils and parmesean pots, cloth table covers and we were definitely not 1.5m from other diners, so that was somewhat disappointing to have that as a worry.

It was lovely to be able to get out however we fear the restaurant was too full with current restrictions.

About the restaurant

If you’re on Lygon Street in Melbourne, it’s hard to imagine you’re looking for sushi or poke bowls. You want satisfying, rich and decadently carb-loaded Italian food. Piccolo Mondo may mean ‘small world’ but the welcoming, Italian hospitality is BIG… and so are the servings of pasta!

Sink your teeth into a succulent veal scaloppine, all manner of seafood and be prepared to deliberate over the sweets menu – it’s a tough choice. Offering a true European experience with Alfresco and even footpath dining, it’s no surprise that in a street filled with Italian eateries, this is one that the foodies love.
