About the restaurant Sumatra House

In this Indonesian specialty restaurant the dishes are richly flavored with spices and herbs, the traditional Boemboes. From Indonesian fish soup and pie filled with chicken to chopped goat meat cooked in curry sauce and steamed mackerel in banana leaves: this is pure Indonesia. A must in Leiden!

Wonderful food at very reasonable prices. The staff and owner always welcome you with a smile and make you feel at home. We keep coming back when in need of comforting time.

The food this evening was amazing. We knew that the standard in Indonesian food in the Netherland is high and this definitely met our expectation.

The portions were very big and we almost couldn’t finish our food. The satay is one of the best I have tasted.

The service was a little slow but then they had a packed restaurant, you can definitely see that the place is popular. We would come again if we were in town again.

Very disappointing.....booked several days ahead, but they gave our table away. Waited 1hr outside in the rain for a table, to then be seated next to a large loud party where you couldn’t hear yourself think - let alone what your own guests were saying. Gave up at the 90mins mark and went next door for a hamburger. Disappointing.

Insufficient staff. Unbelievably slow service with little clue about what is in their menu items. Food was very disappointing with even standard Indonesian nasi goreng was made without the traditional egg.

It is a small restaurant so booking advisable. The rijsttafel was very good and sufficient. The waitress was new and as a result lower rating for service. I would recommend this restaurant.

Very nice meal based on suggestions received from the owner. Booked via the Fork, we were seated at a table under the window and close to the heaters, which was very welcome to us. Chicken Satai and all kinds of curries were great. Good local beer.

Sumatra food is famous for the its spice but I felt that Sumatra House had adjusted food taste to Dutch visitors. I hope by reviewing the taste time to time, this restaurant try to change the taste to 'asli indonesia'.

Service was very slow, including provision of drinks which were of limited range and quantity. Would have liked some nibbles/ tasters whilst waiting to order etc. Food was very tasty and plentiful, however.
