This was an excellent evening with good food, good wine and good service. The service was friendly and helpful re advice and recommendations and we enjoyed the relaxed feeling of the venue but were surprised that a restaurant with such good food and service at a reasonable price wasn’t busier. COVID hits again.
Have been here a few times now, and never leave disappointed. Beautiful food, and service staff are always friendly and happy to help. Thank you for a lovely evening!

The restaurant is great, the staff are welcoming and attentive. The food is wonderful.. I would highly recommend the fish curry. Their chicken tikka is great too.
Taj is a tremendous Indian restaurant. My family has an annual pilgrimage here before Fringe. This year did not disappoint. Wonderful food and great service.

The food was great, but service and atmosphere was below average. Some of this could be due to eating here during Fringe Festival, so would love to go back for a meal during a "normal" time.

I was a regular customer about two years ago and absolutely loved coming in to eat until I started working away from the city and was unable to come in as much as I liked to. Sunday was my fiancé’s birthday and we were coming in with his mother to have her first experience of Indian cuisine and having been a massive fan of your establishment previously I figured we would be safe to bring her in given that you have a selection of mild curries and you've always been a little more upscale than the usual Indian restaurant. It appears that I was wrong in my assumption. Our experience did not begin well, we arrived early and were offered to sit inside or outside and gladly took a seat inside. We then proceed to wait twenty minutes before we were checked in on despite the restaurant being mostly empty due to the early time frame we were in the restaurant (5pm). I spent most of the twenty minutes looking around trying to get wait staff's attention. Once our order was taken, plates were brought out for our entree and my future mother in law's plate was not clean, however this was on the edge of the plate so she scraped it off and we moved on, hoping we wouldn't receive another dirty plate. (again, we were wrong). The entrees were good, albeit very spicy (which surprised me for the vegetable pakora as usually I don't have an issue with it being spicy). The cheese kebabs were the highlight, very tasty and edible by all, although it would have been nice to have a little more of the tamarind sauce with them than what was drizzled on them. We then sat waiting for our next course with empty plates in front of us for another 20 minutes (after finishing eating) until we were finally approached to ask if we were finished (your wait staff don't seem to know what it means when people have their cutlery crossed on their plates, sitting back from the table and chatting). This is where it gets worse. They brought out more plates for our mains and two out of three of our plates had food on them. Like the leftover starch from rice or naan stuck to the plate, easily scratched off with a nail and highly unhygienic. My future mother in law is a cancer patient and as such this is a no go, especially given that this time it was not just on the edge of the plate but on the area that you eat off of. So I caught the attention of a waiter and asked for fresh plates because ours were dirty. He took all three plates and apologized before coming back with more plates ten minutes later which were yet again dirty. We brought this up again with a waitress who apologized and my mother in law explained that it is important that she gets a clean plate because of her cancer treatment and how important it is that she doesn't get sick. For a third time they brought more plates back, again one of the plates had baked on food on it. I had had enough at this point so I asked to speak to the manager, the manager than proceeded to try and speak over me while I was voicing my concerns, trying to put it down to the staining of the turmeric (which by the way, if your plates are so scratched that they are staining then they are no longer hygienic and should be being replaced, once the seal is compromised they are no longer safe for use especially in a hospitality environment where they are being used by more than just one person in comparison to a home location). We were about to walk out when our food came out so we decided to stay (against our better judgement) because we would feel bad to waste the food, as usually I really enjoy your food. When ordering I deliberately chose two dishes I know to normally be mild, butter chicken and lamb korma as well as a Saag Paneer for myself. What I wasn't expecting was for my mild butter chicken to be more like a medium, and the lamb korma hotter again. I can understand my Saag Paneer being hot as I ordered it for myself and am used to chili, but this was my mother in Law's first experience with Indian food and she cannot handle chili at all. All of the curry was too hot for her and she just ended up eating some naan (by the way the garlic naan was wonderful) and some rice with a tiny bit of sauce mixed in so that she could handle it. Even I myself found that the "mild" dishes were not mild in the least and I am used to chili, consuming it on a regular basis due to working in an Indian restaurant myself for years. I can't help but wonder if extra chili wasn't added given how difficult we were being over the plates. I was initially planning to introduce my mother in law and fiancé to Gulab jamun as it is one of my favourite Indian sweets however due to what we had experienced I decided to leave instead. The manager did give us 10% off but was still cold and dismissive of my concerns while we were leaving. At the end of it all I was extremely disappointed, my mother in law was only here for the weekend from Melbourne and I wanted to take her somewhere I knew was good. Taj just isn't what it used to be, the manager who used to serve us the last time we came in (around two years ago) was very attentive and friendly, it just felt cold and lifeless on our return. I don't think I can bring myself to come back after such an experience. Dirty plates should not be taken lightly and certainly shouldn't have to be returned multiple times. On top of this there were multiple other customers complaining about waiting to be served for half an hour, having to ask for service from four different people in the waitstaff and being told they would be right there (they didn't follow through), one gentleman had to come inside and ask for a drink at the bar because of this, voicing his frustration to the manager who was also trying to sort out my bill.
Chose from the fringe menu,very busy and food took 45mins to arrive. Slower in the kitchen than I would've expected with it being from the special menu but food was excellent. Extremely tasty (could've done with more chicken pieces in the dish) but will return.
A disappointing evening - booked early to go to a show. Waited 30 minutes for our drinks ( following an enquiry), mains didn't arrive until we enquired - that was after 60 minutes and then told we had a 10 minute wait ( for food already prepared). Given free drinks. Venue location good
It was so hot inside, they had the windows open but there was no breeze from outside. I asked about the air conditioners being turned on and they told me they were on...they were definitely not on. It was hard to enjoy the great food when we were sitting there sweating from being so hot
The food was delicious as usual and friendly service. It was a warm night and the air conditioning wasn’t very effective, while the windows were also opened. Apart from the heat, it was a good night.
Food, atmosphere and location excellent. Service attentive but confusion about dishes going to wrong table delayed delivery bit but detracted only marginally from occasion.

Taj is a real gem. One of our favourite restaurants in the East End. The food is always excellent and the staff friendly and attentive. Great value for money.
Friendly staff, attentive service, extremely tasty food. Naan took a little long coming out but they were worth the wait. Will definitely be returning!
1.5hrs got mains - opted to pay for the bottle of wine drunk while waiting and to leave. No apology or advice as to how long the wait might have been. 14 other persons in the restaurant- so not busy. Would however try again as generally the food as been good in the past.
The food was really lovely for us six... naan, SUPER saag paneer, aloo gobi, butter chicken, fish curry, crispy baingan, and mocktails (a bit $$$ for no alcohol, but what the heck).. perfect later evening dinner after the film.
