A rare pearl among our careful selection of the best addresses right now

Black Toro was one of the earlier Latin American restaurants to hit Melbourne's contemporary dining scene. It opened back in 2012 in Glen Waverley and has just launched a second inner-city venue on the Windsor end of Chapel Street.

Black Toro Windsor (formerly Shukah) is a blessing for those who appreciate well-executed Latin street food but don't want to travel quite as far East to get it. The menu is similar if not slightly more extensive than Glen Waverley, showcasing snacks, tacos, tostadas and a selection of mostly meaty mains.

Like most modern Melbourne menus, this one is designed to share. While fusion could so easily influence this menu, it doesn't, which is quite refreshing. Most dishes are pretty classic in composition and execution, from the elotes (grilled corn cobs topped with cheese) to the super-cheesy chile relleno to the fresh and vibrant tacos.

The mains take a slight sweet and tropical twist with the inclusions of pineapple (in the Chicken Al Pastor) and banana leaf (in the Lamb Barbacoa). The Sweet Corn Fideos is currently the only one vegetarian main, but it's a showstopper. If you've never had fideos, think wheat-based spaghetti, but broken. This take is prepared with lots and lots of queso.

The cocktails at Black Toro don't take a backseat, with each recipe carefully curated to reflect traditional Mexican recipes that suit the Melbourne palate. If you're up for a big one, you can arrange bottomless mimosas, Bloody Mary's and frozen margaritas on Saturdays and Sundays. A selection of wine, beer, both Latin and Latin-inspired, are also available.

INSIDER tip

A slice of Mexico has hit Windsor by way of Glen Waverley. Chef Garen Maskal has opened a second outpost of his popular modern-Mexican restaurant The Black Toro on Chapel Street. 'We wanted something lighter, brighter and more fun here', says Maskal of The Black Toro Windsor, which has taken over the space formerly occupied for two years by his restaurant Shukah, 'I love Mexican flavours cause they're fresh and punchy, with heaps of spices and citrus a no-fuss type of food. Maskal operates the Kalian Group with his cousins Aret and Sasoon Arzadian and is well established in the Melbourne food scene. Together they run Glen Waverley's The Black Toro and Armenian city eatery Sezar. Maskal was once sous chef at Ezard, a history that's reflected clearly by his creativity and outstanding technique. It's best to start with a cocktail and then graze.

The pork hock is easily the star of the menu and easily feeds 2-3 hungry adults if ordered with matching share plates.

We had the feed me tasting menu and was really happy with everything that we ate!! Also a frozen coconut margarita was perfect to cool me down on a 30 degree day! Great music selection also.

Love this place. The margaritas could have used not tequila but the food was great. Get the kingfish tostodas and the friend chicken.

Limited menu but very tasty and satisfying Iberian style tapas. Typical casual fine dining vibe with modern contemporary decor but staff are laid back and easy going.
