The Jack in the Green

We’ve been going to the Jack-in-the-green for many years. The food, service and ambiance is consistently very good with a regularly changing menu. One of Exeter’s best and most reliable gastropubs

We have been dining here every time we’ve visited parents who have lived in the area for over 20 years. There is always a warm welcome no matter how busy they are. The menu is exciting ranging from exceptionally cooked pub food to a superb a la carte menu of dishes, often with a mediterranean twist whilst sourcing local products. Today I opted for a dish from The Specials menu - a beautifully cooked fillet of plaice with tarragon sauce served with a dressed salad of baby leaves and skinny fries. Having spent 25 years living in Belgium I am a fan of mayo with fries but have, to date, been very disappointed with the poor versions of this sauce in the UK. Not so at The Jack in the Green. Best mayo outside of Belgium (and probably within Belgium too!) I can’t wait for my next visit.

Took my 90 year old mother back again for lunch here today. Very warm welcome, good (sanitised) setting. Perfect food and service. The staff are very friendly, but unobtrusive so there’s no interruptions to your conversation. Will definitely be returning. Many thanks to all

Welcoming with an atmosphere you would expect of a fine dining restaurant. The service was efficient and the food very good indeed. I would have no hesitation in recommending dining at this restaurant.

Fabulous food and service. A great choice on the menu. I had buttered chicken and Caesar salad followed by blueberry financier, pavlova and sorbet. Absolutely delicious!

Food and welcome at the Jack has always been fantastic and it certainly didn't disappoint this time. Paul and the team are excellent, and the food - I’d go as far As to say this was the best meal yet. Anywhere. Why they don’t have multiple Michelin stars is beyond me. The restaurant is better than any M starred restaurant I’ve eaten in. 10 out of 10.

The staff were very friendly and efficient. The owner was very affable and gregarious. The food was very tasty and excellently presented and the atmosphere inside was lovely. If I had to make any criticisms I would say that the lamb loin (although delicious and very well plated) was not as generous as I would expect for circa £25. Three modest medallions for the main. But every other aspect of the meal was fantastic and I would not hesitate to recommend the Jack to anyone wanting a great meal in lovely surroundings.
