The Wanderer is the ideal restaurant for those who seek a different approach to gastronomy and hospitality. The design is intimate, homey and its common table is warm, which enables an interesting interaction, not only between guests, but also between guests and the Chef. The tasting menus changes every 6 weeks, in order to serve new seasonal and creative dishes, as well as a new story-telling. An authentic gastronomic journey for all your senses.
Its Chef - Chef Selim -, shows a very different and unique style, truly inspired by numerous countries across multiple continents, where he lived. However and if we had to describe his essence in a few words: international, creative, inspiring and instinctive are the ones that do justice to his culinary masterpieces.
When you’re a real foodie you have definitely to eat in the Wanderer. This was our third visit and not the last one. Thanks again Selim,Dan and Charlotte. We can feel your passion and love to hear all your stories about the local ingredients. When you go to the Wanderer it’s not a normal dinner you travel around the world with your taste buds.Even in this Covid-19 time this is a great way to travel with......and it reminds me on traveling in the past.So happy to found you last year
Can we call The Wanderer a restaurant or a dining experience. I would say The New Way to enjoy a diner out. If you are thinking about going there, you should go with no hesitation! And your will enjoy the passion of a team! A word about the food, no need you won't be disappointed! Anne&John
What a wonderful experience and brilliant hosts for an unforgettable evening. Stunning quality food and drink made this an outstanding culinary evening to remember!
An amazing experience again on the “last night” the food was amazing and Selim and Dan extraordinary. Hopefully the Wanderer will have returned when we next visit.
We live in a world of uniformity; these days very few experiences stand out as unique and memorable. Chef Selim is engaging, intelligent and masterful. His dishes are difficult to describe because they're unlike other dishes you have been served and that's a good thing. He and his staff will make you feel "at home" from the moment you enter this thoughtfully designed, intimate space. Each bite was magic and every pairing, complimentary. I've been dining out for 50 years and I have never had an experience that compared to The Wanderer. Perhaps Chef Selim will inspire others to follow suit.
What can I say? From there moment you walk in, through a shabby 70s shopping centre thinking you are lost, you feel at home, which is exactly what Selim and Dan are aiming for - it’s your living room for the evening. I don’t want to say too much because half of the experience is hearing the background to the place. You chat, they tell you their stories, and you share yours. You chat as they work, and feel like you ate making friends. The food is totally sourced on and around the island, and it is prepared with love and care and respect. From the tuna tartare and pork vindaloo amuse bouche, to the mango panna cotta at the end everything is beautifully set out, and you hear how it was sourced and prepared. I absolutely loved the warming, comforting soup made from a kind of squash with pickles and sesame and smoked paprika oil, and the tuna course had been caught only a couple of days before and was served reverently raw with watermelon and cashew purée and garnishes of plants I’d never tried before. The pork tenderloin was as juicy and tender as could be, with parsnip mash and amazing pickles - much of the stock of ingredients had gone through some process so as not to waste it during the pandemic. Selim’s other restaurants on the island are now my ‘to do’ list - this is passion project as cooking for three or four people once a week doesn’t cut it. I’m totally confident they’re going to blow me away too.
This is not a standart restaurant. Chef & SERVICE is WITH u for the evening. 100% local food 100% heart and passion 0% stiffness athmospere. We will hear about him the next years
The restaurant is fantastic and we really enjoyed the food and especially the stories to each course. It is one of the best dinner we ever had and we visited a lot of very good restaurants. We can only recommend The Wanderer. It is so sad that we were the last guests before the restaurant had to close because of the Corona Virus. As soon as it is open again we will have another visit and enjoy the special atmosphere and the hospitality. You will have a great future. Thank you Selim and Dan for that remarkable evening and it was the highlight of my birthday.
Outstanding and different go and meet new friends eat amazing innovative food.
We've been eating in the restaurants of Funchal since 2003 and sampled a few highs and lows over that time. The Wanderer, it's delightful, enthusiastic owner, Selim and wonderful team ( Dan & Charlotte) in our opinion provide one the best hospitality and dining experiences in the city. The atmosphere is relaxed & friendly from the moment you're greeted by the lovely Charlotte. Dan is consistently efficient in his work but remains unobtrusive, polite, knowledgeable and friendly. The superlatives that could be used to describe Selim would be endless- he's a wizard and artist, incorrigibly enthusiastic, driven by a passion and purpose to deliver the very best food that firstly tastes divine, secondly is expertly presented and finally and uniquely tells a story. The food - the 6 course ( or chapter) taster menu and accompanying beers, spirits and wines were indeed a wonderful journey from starter to sweet. Thoroughly recommended and we'll be back in 2021.
Excellent concept with one predetermined menu, presented in a very artistic way. Amazing experience for both eyes, ears and tongue. We wish the Wanderer all the best in the future. Ingrid and Mikael
One of the best meals and meal experiences I’ve had in a very long time. When we travel, I love to book a splurge meal from the worlds best restaurants list from Michelin. The service, food, and experience was on par. I hope everyone learns of this up and coming restaurant made with so much devotion and passion.
This was an exceptional evening of culinary delight. Take 3 couples, a hugely talented chef, a charming maitre d, mix together in intimate surroundings and you have a wonderful time. The food was outstanding, unpredictable and of wonderful quality. Eleven out of ten.
We moved to Madeira, in part, to be kinder to the earth and reduce our desire to travel by plane. Instead we seek unique experiences on this varied island to satisfy our wanderlust. The Wanderer took us on a worldwide journey of discovery so well thought out and orchestrated we forgot at times that we are on a tiny island in the Atlantic. Everything was exceptional from first discovering the location (allow yourself a bit of extra time), the intriguing atmosphere, the creatively delicious foods and exceptional non-alcoholic drinks to match (alcohol also available!), and the friendly engaging staff of just three people. We shared our meal with strangers all from different parts of the Europe and thankfully for us enjoyed conversation and stories in English. One thing we were not prepared for was how long the evening would be…allow 4-5 hours, as if in a home with friends. :-) We await eagerly our next rendezvous!
It was our second visit at "The Wanderer". We came with high expectations and were not disappointed. "The Wanderer" is a high class Restaurant with extremely fresh and regional food, the staff is extremely friendly and the location is extremely cozy. Therefore, if you want to have an extraordinary evening - BOOK THIS PLACE!!!
This is a very special feeling. Dinner at home away from your home. Madeirian products taken to a new level, with a chef telling you about why you are eating what you are andyou are seated maximum 8 people around the table. So that table is a full restaurant. Drink cider, drink wine, drink beer... be prepared for using your taste buds and get into a good social talk at the same time. Don’t go with friends.... meet new ones.
The food was superb. We have done a few MStar restaurants, this was better than some. Not the easiest place to find but persevere you will enjoy the concept, the wine and the food, we certainly did. Great to be able to chat with the chef ( Selim? Forgive the spelling) about the ideas behind each course. Will return next time we are in Madeira.
A unique food experience! Each dish was a feast for the eyes and the palate complemented by attentive, personal service. It will remain on our list as a “must do” experience when we return to Madeira!
An incredible multi-sensorial food experience.
Ten out of ten from us! We were initially nervous about coming to an untried restaurant to sit with unknown guests. But the whole evening was fantastic from every perspective. This is not a restaurant in the usual context. Selim and Dan open their lounge and dining room for people to come and enjoy a remarkable experience. Selim is an extraordinarily talented chef with a huge passion for his craft and art. We were blown away by the quality, presentation, taste and theatre behind every lovingly crafted dish. Dan was always there to attend to our every need, and served us with great enthusiasm and knowledge. It’s hard to sum up the whole evening because Selim and Dan deserve every superlative. Just go and be amazed.
