Finding this restaurant was not a coincidence: my husband is a regular visitor through his work with an international company, which regularly uses the restaurant for meetings and lunches. Despite not having reserved, the four of us were made feel welcome, my husband greeted by name, by the cheerful and friendly hostess. From the outside the restaurant looks rather run-down, especially in the dark, and the entrance could do with a bit of decorating, yet once inside the restaurant the combination of tastefully dressed tables, the rough-unfinished-look of the ceiling, the warm colour of the floor, the spotless glasses and cutlery and the flowers everywhere, made for a great interior. Maybe not to everybody's taste, but it reminds one that this restaurant is a renovated barn, it shows many of the original features and the stage-decors, approx. 120 years old, are original decors rescued from the Groningen Theatre, making them possibly the oldest preserved stage decors in the country (the hostess told us). And the food was simply great: for starters we had smoked salmon (home-smoked by Johan, a friend and regular guest, so we were told by the waitress), home-made duckliverpaté and coquilles st Jacques, all from the van Tarel specials menu. The dishes were fresh, perfectly flavoured and presented simply yet stylishly. For mains we all had the same dish: codfish with a champagne beurre-blanc and caviar (served by one of the chefs). Though it is a warm starter and part of the monthly changing menu, having it for mains was not a problem. We ordered wine by the glass, and could choose from 5 open whites. I do not like sauvignon blanc; the hostess recommended a chardonnay, which was great, but I found it a bit too woody: it overruled the codfish. But the rest of my party enjoyed the sauvignon blanc with colombard and the pinot blanc we had with the salmon was equally perfect. Not being dessert-lovers we chose to finish our meal with coffee and the home-made frozen cream truffle which comes with it. Needless to say, even though van Tarel is a bit off the beaten track, and tricky to find in the dark countryside, we will be back!
