Excellent
We enjoyed the starters (melon and cured ham) however the codfish we had was so salty it was inedible. We are no strangers to codfish eating it regularly at home and for most meals for our one week stay in Lisbon, however this was unbelievably salty, leaving my mouth feeling burnt. We told the waiter however were dismissed as tourists unfamiliar with the dish. We came here based on fantastic reviews online however we were let down.
This family run restaurant is a real gem of a find. Simple traditional cuisine. We tried to book a table for lunch today (Sunday 13/10), but their website said they were full. Fortunately, I had a look on thefork.pt which showed tables were available! Please double check if sites show no tables available, it would be a shame to miss out. Definitely one not to be missed.
With such choice in Lisbon it’s hard to rate this any higher than average. Grilled fish was good but the bacalau and the grilled meat dishes were only ok. On a positive note it’s very affordable, the waiter was busy and we had to ask /remind him a number of times for drinks we had ordered.
Amazing starters, clams and fried prawns were delicious. Scrambled eggs with portuguese sausage was a fun dish. The main courses were just average though, had high expectations for their bacalhau a bras but it didn’t turn out to be surprising, as well as the cod fritters where the breading was too thick to our liking. Service was good, waiter was attentive and the atmosphere really reflects the local portuguese vibes
Good, cosy and cheep
We had a really nice meal last night. The home made sausage followed by bream & vegetables were outstanding. We ordered the almond ice cream and chocolate sauce as a finishing treat then we were given complimentary grappa & sherry with our decaf expresso. We enjoyed the small family like atmosphere and decor and one of our best meals in Lisbon.
Varina da Madragoa is a nice small place. The restaurant had the feel of grandmas kitchen and very relaxed. We had the cod and pork chop. Pork chop is thin and has a mustard based sauce. Best pork chop we ever had. Cod was cooked really well. The potatoes were cooked with skin on and tasted like a buttery baked potato, which was splendid. Also, when going here get the sausage plate. Very delicious. The house white wine went well with the fish. Overall very good restaurant and would like to go back to try different things.
Eccellente
We had a really nice evening with typical food and a funny waiter.
Really Nice Ambiente. Traditionell food. Local People. Would go there again.
Authentic portuguese cuisine!
Very nice small restaurant with great Portugese food. Very good for a fair price. Not touristic, so you get the real nice Portugese food.
Obrigado.
The food was very good and up to the fame, desserts were a bit disappointing, just one of them was really traditional.
