The service was just amazing. The staff are so professional and well trained. The seafood was amazing. I found the meat was overly seasoned though. I would definitely recommend.

Amounts served too small. The lamb was too fatty and the meat was too tough to eat .

It was hit and miss. The sushi and sashimi was brilliant. Set menu left a bit to be desired the quantity of tempura Brussels sprouts was bizzar, no tempura sauce and very monotone dish. Stick with the classics team and twist them a little. My yakitori came cold which was a pity as it was tasty. I should have sent it back, but at that point the service experience was deteriorating. To be honest, the service was second rate. There were a lot of glamourous staff who were unattentive and just went missing. It started at the greeting with the receptionist not providing a warm welcome and who seemed confused as to her role, all in all she provided a useless role that put you on the back foot from the start. Several times through service we had to clean up our dishes and the foodservice timing was erratic. This again was confusing as the venue appeared a third full. All in all a very hit and miss experience that would have been a borderline hit if the front of house had its act together.

This was the best Japanese food I’ve ever eaten. The presentation and quality was superb. The waiter walked us through the menu and answered all our questions. We felt like we were his only customers. Absolutely sensational. Great price for the exceptional quality. We have been talking about it to a lot of friends and family.

Poor food, average service. Poor atmosphere - loud music not 'in theme'. It was my daughters Birthday and we asked for the restaurant to contact us via the online booking to arrange a treat - this didn't happen. We left after 50 minutes after spending $30 on bottled water and $135 on some nibbles and continued our evening elsewhere. We had to pay at the bar as there wasn't a waitress in sight. Sigh.

About the restaurant

Meet Yamagen Japanese Restaurant, the hottest new Izakaya on the Gold Coast.

Blending old school kitchen samurai skills with culinary innovation, Yamagen reinvents a traditional Japanese izakaya with a stylish and innovative twist. Spanning three spaces (the bar, table-seki and sushi counter) there's something for all tastes and occasions.

Offering a long list of craft beers, top-shelf sake, Japanese whiskies and cutting-edge cocktails, the bar is the perfect place for the thirsty to start and finish their evening.

Menu highlights include Sashimi Tacos and Master Kobe Wagyu MS9+ straight from the kushiyaki grill, table-seki is the restaurant's main dining area and the best place to take advantage of the full Yamagen experience.

With a limited capacity, the sushi counter is Yamagen's exclusive dining space. Here, guests experience an authentic omakase - a stream of market fresh sashimi and sushi, as well as delicate share plates, like Yellowfin Tuna Tartare - expertly selected by the chef.

Regardless of where you start or finish, Yamagen embodies true Japanese omote-nashi - the art of hospitality. It's all about exceptional food, an electric atmosphere and an interactive dining experience.

This is stylish and innovative izakaya dining that will transport you to the vibrant back alleys of Tokyo... so get ready for the hustle and bustle.
