10/10My second visit in 2 years. This might be the best restaurant in Bilbao, or in Basqueland, even in Europe!

8.5/10The 17 course tasting menu took 3 hours over lunch time. The food tast and presentation was incredible. The wine list has both inexpensive and pricy options. The service was somewhat less professional than I was expecting, but still satisfactory. The restaurant is stark and got kind of loud at times when it became full. The food portion was too much (oddly). We were quite full after course 12 and the last 5 were more forced than enjoyed.

3/10Unfriendly staff made us wait outside in the rain for ten minutes. Quality of the food was not good for 10 out of 13 dishes.

6.5/10We opted for the 9 course tasting menu and were very excited to eat here, but the style was not really to our taste. The dishes felt very traditional with intense sauces that we felt over powered the amazing quality of the fresh ingredients, We prefer light, fresh dishes with lots of colour, so perhaps this was the wrong restaurant choice for us. We love seafood and fish, and prefer not to eat meat, so we would choose from the a la carte menu in the future to avoid the steak course which was completely wasted on us. The table service was excellent, but the wine recommended to us by the waiter was awfully sour and tasted more like the regional cidre than wine. Due to our poor Spanish speaking, we did not feel able to discuss this during our visit. This is the first time I have been disappointed with a Michelin restaurant.

10/10This restaurant was superb. We opted for the 13-course tasting menu and they were able to deliver it brilliantly for me as I cannot tolerate gluten or cows milk dairy. The service was attentive and helpful. Highly recommend.

9/10The fish was simply perfect! A restaurant for everyone, who likes the pure taste of the excellent ingredients without "chichi". The recommended wine pairing was a perfect fit.

8/10The food is by all measures fantastic. The service is absolutely terrible. It took us 2.5 hrs to eat here and there were periods of up to 20 minutes in between dishes not for any reasons other than there being a food critic dining at our same time and all the attention and speedy service going towards him. Given the passion behind the menu, it would’ve been nice to have the servers describe what we were eating. We were just given dishes and then the servers walked away.

9.5/10Amazing dining experience. We got to sit at the sous chef’s table and got to watch the chefs work their magic. We ordered the chefs tasting menu and it was one of the best dining experiences ever ever had. We really enjoyed the flavors of basque cuisine. Chef Zarate selected some of the best seafood dishes we could ever imagine. The turbot fish was definitely the best thing we’ve ever tried. It’s a must order. We paired our meal with local basque wines which was exquisite. Thank you chef Zarate and your team for an amazing meal.

10/10This is a small cozy restaurant Michelin rated. The food was superb, the service was excellent, the food presentation was lovely with a tasting menu choice. The wine selection was extensive and carefully balanced. Highly recommend this restaurant.

10/10We sat at the chef’s table adjacent to the kitchen. The cooking staff was very professional and friendly. It was fun to watch them prepare food as art and offer their commentary. Portions were ample and tasty. We especially liked the eggs with truffle, the fresh grouper, the chocolate mousse with hints of orange. This was a great evening.

10/10I was visiting Bilbao with my daughter and celebrated her birthday with a special lunch at Zarate. We both opted for the tasting menu and were very pleased with the quality and presentation of the food. The only smudge in our experience was that the first four or five courses were served in a bit of an accelerated pace. The servings slowed down after then and we enjoyed the rest of the food in a more leisurely pace. I opted for the Chef’s Table which was inside the kitchen but separated from the main dining room by a glass wall. This still made us feel that we were part of the main dining room but was within the cocoon of the kitchen giving my daughter and I an opportunity to interact with the chefs and servers. I cannot do a serving by serving review but overall, the food was excellent! They do deserve the one Michelin star rating and I won’t be surprised if they get the second sooner than later.
